Know Your Poster Type
February 23, 2009
Consider the following suggestions for your poster printing:
1- Read it first.
In poster printing, most designers are also the writers. Thus, if you intend to do the design as well as the content of your poster print, might as well understand the crucial role that your font has to play to make your clients understand your message.
Your font would be nothing if your readers cannot read the writing in your printed poster. If you want to be clear on your ideas and message, be sure to present them well. Use fonts that are readable as well as legible. Take away all the nonsense and stick to the core of your message. Break long sentences and use clear headings and subheadings to introduce your idea. And above all, summarize your content to help your font emphasize the urgency in your message.
2- Fonts have different voices.
You have to understand even at the start of your poster print job that your choice of font reflects the tone of your content. Your font has the power to say what you want to say in the manner that is acceptable to your readers. So determine what you would want to say and then choose your fonts wisely. Not every typeface can be appropriate for your purpose. When in doubt, you can always use the good old fashioned fonts that old-timers use for their color poster printing.
3- Know your scale.
A good poster printer knows that a font can work effectively when combined with the right size. Both body and image text can have a positive impression when scaled right. One way of making your text work is to stack them. Stacking helps you highlight your words, provide visual interest, and persuade your readers to read through your poster printing
.
4- Provide clarity and function to your font.
When poster printing, avoid if you can stretching or scaling your fonts to achieve emphasis. It is for a more readable and legible content. Although you can decrease or increase, or apply bold or italics, to your headlines and subheadings, your text can be read easily if you keep to the font’s original appearance.
Starting your text with a strong typeface can attract the readers’ visual interest. With the right font, your text can become as meaningful and moving as that of any other photo or image. And with the right typeface, your font can be the design to affect attention to your marketing collateral.
